What does your health insurance cover for dental hygiene?

Are you looking for a registered dental hygienist in Amsterdam? For adults, treatment costs are often largely covered by your supplementary dental insurance. Are you under 18 years old? In that case, treatments are fully covered by the basic health insurance, and you do not pay any deductible. To make things as convenient as possible for you, we always send your care invoice directly to your health insurer if you have supplementary coverage.

Is pediatric dental care covered by health insurance at The Dental Suite? +

Yes, fully. In the Netherlands, all dental hygiene treatments for children and teenagers under 18 years old are 100% free. They are covered by the basic health insurance (basisverzekering). At our Amsterdam-East boutique practice, we send the bill directly to your insurance company. You do not need extra dental insurance, and you do not have to pay a personal deductible (eigen risico).

Can a dental hygienist clean teeth with braces, clear aligners, or permanent retainers? +

Absolutely. We are experts in cleaning teeth during and after orthodontic treatments. As active members of the NVM, we use the special Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol with the modern EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master. This allows us to safely and gently remove plaque and tartar around braces, slotjes, attachments for clear aligners (like Invisalign and Spark), and behind fixed metal wires (spalkjes) without damaging them.

Is dental cleaning painful? What is the EMS Airflow treatment? +

At The Dental Suite, we do not use uncomfortable scraping tools. Instead, we use the advanced EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master. We follow the official Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) method. This uses a warm, gentle stream of water and very fine powder (Erythritol) to wash away plaque and stains. It provides a virtually painless cleaning, which is perfect if you have sensitive teeth or dental anxiety.

How do you treat dark, brown, or black stains on a child's teeth? +

Dark or black lines near the gums on primary teeth (melktanden) are normal. They are caused by harmless bacteria that mix with iron in the child's saliva. At our boutique studio in Amsterdam-East, we clean these stains quickly and safely with a mild Airflow powder stream. This reaches into small grooves without scratching the teeth, making them smooth and bright again.

What are the costs for a dental hygienist treatment in Amsterdam? +

The prices for a dental hygienist in the Netherlands are the same everywhere. They are set by the Dutch government (NZa). We use standard codes for our treatments, such as M01 for cleaning and prevention. For example, a treatment costs about €15.76 for every 5 minutes. Do you have extra dental insurance (aanvullende tandartsverzekering)? Then your insurance company may pay back up to 100% of the costs. Is a formal referral from a dentist required to secure an appointment? +

No, you do not need a referral letter from a dentist. Anyone can visit a dental hygienist directly (Directe Toegankelijkheid Mondhygiëne - DTM). New adult and pediatric patients from Amsterdam-Oost are welcome to sign up independently. You can book your cleaning, gum treatment, or teeth whitening easily through our secure online Vertimart portal.
