In the dental practice gum disease is a problem in Amsterdam. Firstly, what is inflammation of your gum? Also called Gingivitis is a very common disease. Your gum is bleeding, red and swollen. It can be sensitive and it can smell bad.

Everyone has gum disease at some point. They are caused by the body’s response to bacteria that build up in the mouth and causes inflammation. If you do nothing this can lead to Periodontitis and the loss of teeth. This includes that your smile is less beautiful and you may have problems chewing and talking.

In addition, untreated gum disease can increase the risk of conditions including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and cerebrovascular disease.

So what can you do about this?

1. visit the dental hygienist amsterdam every 3 or 6 months

Seeing a dental hygienist regularly can help prevent gum problems. If there is gingivitis or periodontitis, the treatment can be done immediately. If treatment is started early enough, it can prevent further damage to the tissues of the teeth.

Ask your dental hygienist or dentist for a periodontal examination as part of your six-monthly checkup. Extra appointments for a professional dental cleaning or teeth cleaning by your dental hygienist is very important while having gum problems.

The time between appointments is usually three, four or six months. The frequency depends on the quality of your oral hygiene at home, the degree of inflammation of the gums and the presence of so-called residual gum pockets.

3. clean the spaces between your teeth

Use a toothpick (or interdental brushes), toothpicks and dental floss at least once a day if the openings are too small for brushes or toothpicks. You may need to use a different sized interdental brush for different tooth openings. This cleaning is best before brushing your teeth. Do you want to know what is suited for your teeth? 4. use mouthwash

After brushing your teeth, a mouthwash or mouthrinse can be used. This can prevent the build-up of plaque for up to 12 hours.

Mouthwashes with Chlorhexidine are the most effective against gum disease but also have strong side effects such as tooth discoloration, black tongue, taste change and sometimes they can affect the soft tissues of the mouth. So, never just use it and always ask your dental hygienist for advice whether you need such a strong mouthwash. It’s also only recommended to use Chlorhexidine mouthwashes for a maximum of two weeks.

Always ask which mouthwash you should use and which one is suitable for your situation. Want to know more? Make an appointment here
